What to Know When Choosing Web Hosting

Need some answers to problems you are having with hosting your site? Generally, the main problems people have when choosing a web hosting company are which one is the most reliable? What is the required amount of disk space and bandwidth needed for my site? And how much does all this cost? Well, there are literally thousands of comparable web hosting companies all wrestling over your business. Luckily for you the prices are falling in this industry, because of all the competitors, and many are becoming increasingly more reliable companies, because of how serious their reviews are to their sales.
Chances are that if you are reading up on how to determine the right web hosting company, you aren't starting the next MySpace, and are beginning with a smaller or medium sized website. So this is where we will begin. If you are going with a small site you are pretty safe selecting a cheaper web hosting company. You won't need a lot of disk space or bandwidth for a site like this. And many companies will let you upgrade easily if you need more.
The majority of you are probably researching web hosting for a small or medium sized business. For businesses it is important to predict your future needs. Growth is what all companies want to achieve, so make sure you don't limit yourself. More traffic will require you to get more bandwidth. More products to sell means you will need extra disk space. 100 MB of disk space is a reasonable place to begin, but make sure the host allows you to upgrade. Remember to think about any possible growth your company will experience. Disk space is easy to come by now, you can get 100s of GB of disk space for very little money, this extra space can be used for anything. Bandwidth is determined by the amount of traffic your website will get every month. 1 GB of bandwidth is a fairly safe place to start, but again remember to make sure you can upgrade.
Some more factors you should consider are site stats, mySQL databases, auto responders, uptime, additional domains, site builders, support to mention a few. Without a near perfect uptime, buying traffic for your company site could lead to some problems. If your website isn't up then you are paying for nada and that sucks. It is unlikely you will find a company that guarantees 100% uptime, because every company needs to fix things from time to time, but look for one with 99.9 or 99.99% Excelling technical support is important for newbie website owners. It is also important so you don't have to wait a week for answers if there is a problem. Email accounts are important so you look more professional when sending an email. Using a yahoo mail account when sending a business email doesn't look to hot. You should look for 20+ email accounts, but this isn't hard to find anymore. A lot of companies offer unlimited accounts. People who are unfamiliar with HTML should look for a host that gives you a website builder. The ability to host more than 1 domain is huge bonus so you don't have to set up a new hosting account if you want to add a domain. I would look for a web hosting company that offers unlimited domains. Also look for a host that has CGI and MYSQL for databases. CGI access will let you run scripts from your website to interact with your visitors.
Large sites will clearly require you to have more disk space, and I hope you will be getting a lot more traffic, so you will also need more bandwidth. You should look into getting dedicated hosting if the cost isn't of much importance to you. I will go into more depth about large sites in another article, mainly because 99% of people at that stage will not need help picking a host.
